Organization challenge check-in #4

We moved this week, so I have accomplished a ton of stuff on the organization front, but I feel more disorganized than ever. The first week after a move is always tough for me. In this case it was even a bit tougher. Without getting into unnecessary family drama, for the next month or two we are storing all of my dad’s belongings at the new house as well as our own. That has made organization a little bit difficult. OK, a lot difficult, but I have promised myself I won’t complain. We have been amply compensated for the inconvenience.

I have kept our kitchen functional the entire move, which I am very proud of. Aside from one incident involving a KFC buffet (ick!) and a pizza party at Cheyenne’s preschool we have been eating at home the entire week.

We also got the compost bin set up. It is unbelievable how much that has reduced the amount of trash we create. I never even realized how much of our trash could be composted. I keep a little container by the sink and when it is full it gets taken out to the compost pile. The girls have claimed this as one of their chores. It took Isabella a few times to realize that the container doesn’t go in the bin with the scraps, but I think she’s getting it.

I also set up my clothesline this past week. I bought a simple clothesline at the local hardware store for $2.06 and four brackets that were $1.99 each. Zach put two brackets on each side of the patio and I tied the line in a knot and strung it between them to create two lines. When I am done with the line I just pull down the whole thing, wrap it up and store it in a dresser that sits right by the patio door. I bought a very cute vinyl bag with cherries on it at the thrift store for $3 and I keep it hanging on the patio door.

The clothes have been drying very fast on the clothesline. Actually, in about half the time it takes the dryer to do the job. One of my big challenges with laundry is to keep up with it. When I get overwhelmed with laundry I tend to use the dryer. This is an ongoing issue I need to address. I have been cracking down somewhat on Cheyenne’s thrice daily costume changes, but with two little kids and a construction worker DH laundry can get a little out of hand. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

My other laundry issue is that I hate putting it away. It’s silly, I know. I should do it while I’m watching TV or talking on the phone, but for some reason I just don’t. Zach hates it too, but he’s agreed to take care of the cat litter if I take care of the laundry and I feel like I am getting the better end of that trade. I am going to work on my resolve. If I can just get myself in the habit of it, I think I will be OK.

G.G.B., my aforementioned Swedish grandmother has promised to come out to visit me in June and help whip this house into shape. That gives me hope. I will keep fighting the battle the best I can and await the coming of the cavalry in June.

congrats on the move, stella. may your new home be a haven of organization and green living!

re: the laundry. dunno if this will work for you or not, but i had the same issue. hated putting laundry away. so i reconfigured my clothes storage to require very little folding. i have baskets for tank tops, socks, and such so i just throw them in there. the only things i end up folding now are the t-shirts i sleep in. everything else gets hung up on hangers to dry, then i just put them straight in the closet.

i’m in awe of your ability to keep the kitchen running even during a move. i’m back on the cooking-at-home horse but there was a lot of takeout during the last few weeks. i have been ordering mostly from places that bring the food in foil containers since those can at least be recycled.

which brings me to the question: why does new york city only recycle plastic bottles and jugs? people are paying top dollar for recycled plastic, so it seems like they are really missing an opportunity ...

Moves can be so stressful. I remember saying that the next move I make will be to the grave after we moved into our current home!

I have the same laundry issues as you. It tends to backup on me and then I do a bunch of it and then the putting away is a real chore! I do separate loads for my daughter and mine and my husband’s clothes. That way I can fold a basket of laundry and just take it to one room to unload it all.

I’ll be checking back to see if anyone else comes up with a laundry solution I have not thought of!

I love the way you think Madge! I am going to give not folding my clothes a try. I have separate dresser drawers for pants, shirts, and underclothes, so I guess it doesn’t really need to be folded. The kids clothes in particular never stay folded, so I don’t know why I bother doing it in the first place.

That is much cheaper than the solution I thought of last night, which was to pay a neighborhood kid to fold my laundry for me. I can be so lazy sometimes. :)

I’m glad you are getting better about eating at home. I think it’s probably harder to do when you live alone. When I lived alone I was terrible about eating at home. The pressure of having other mouths to feed and the expense of taking all those mouths out to eat are powerful motivations. It’s a proccess.

I think the great thing about these challenges is that even when you slip up, you are still aware of the choices you are making. I think that is key in any change.

Hi Christine! We cross posted. I like the idea of doing everyone’s laundry in separate loads. That would eliminate the sorting too if I could get everyone their own laundry basket. That would help me identify who’s creating all this laundry anyway. You guys are the best!

I really need to start line-drying my laundry. I was able to reduce my gas bill by around a third over the winter by not running the heating overnight, so I assume the dryer is now the largest consumer of gas in the house. I’ll bet I can bring that down a bit.

My compost bin is currently full to the brim and it’s getting hard to fit any more scraps in there. As soon as we get a dry day I’m going to remove a bunch of the ‘cooked’ compost from the bottom and dig it into the vegetable plot. That should free up enough space in the bin for the rest of the year.

Rich, I am impressed that you were able to save so much money! I’m even more impressed that you were able to sleep with the heat off at night all winter. That is hard core!

It was fine, actually. The house was warm at bedtime and I have a thick duvet :)

Admittedly the house was usually like Siberia in the morning, but fortunately my place heats up quickly. Plus, it gave me an incentive to get on the exercise bike the moment I got out of bed.

Turning the heat completely off probably not an option if you have kids in the house, I realize.
