Organization Challenge

I am in the midst of my 11th move in the last 12 years. It’s been a fun and crazy 12 years, as your late teens and twenties often are, but I am ready to be settled. This will be the last move for quite a while and Zach and I are very excited. As we box up all our worldly possessions one more time, we have been talking and daydreaming about our life in the new house.
It’s funny how many small details come up in our conversations. “Just think, Stella, you can put a laundry basket right under the laundry chute off the kitchen and finally have a good place to put all those cloth rags,” or “I want to put the bikes somewhere out of the way, but easy to get down so we will actually use them.” “Maybe we should put a little chalkboard or whiteboard in the kitchen to write down stuff we need as we realize it so we don’t have to make so many emergency runs to the store."
We believe that every little action helps, but, like most of us, sometimes we lose focus. One of the big obstacles to living more in line with our values has been organization. I start out with the best of intentions, vowing to bring my stainless steel water bottle, my cloth grocery bags and my travel coffee cup everywhere. I resolve to ride my bike for errands and only use paper towels for really yucky cat or baby messes. Then life intervenes and I am dashing out the door forgetting my water bottle, or taking the car because I’m 5 foot 2 and my bike is hung too high for me to reach, or reaching for a paper towel to clean up a juice spill because I haven’t washed the cloth rags.
I suspect that I’m not alone in being derailed in my efforts to be green by disorganization, so I want to invite you to join me in The Sunny Way Organization Challenge. Spring is a perfect time to do this. It doesn’t have to be big. Maybe you’ll resolve to put the cloth grocery bags back in the car when you’ve unloaded the groceries so you don’t forget them, or maybe you’ll streamline the laundry so it’s easier to line dry it. Whatever it is we want to hear from you. For those of you who are already super-organized, tell us your secrets. I’ll be chronicling my efforts as best I can during the move and I’d love to hear more about yours. We’re all in this together.

i’m in, stella! i’m ridiculously busy these days and so i end up buying food while i’m out and about which means more garbage and typically, worse food.
my goal this week is going to be to limit dining out to actual “dining” experiences with friends and bring food from home when i’m just running around.
i’m also going to get myself a clean canteen water bottle. my old bottle started leaking a while ago and i haven’t replaced it which means that i haven’t been drinking very much water…
I’m in. I really need to start doing the cloth grocery bag thing. Can anyone recommend a brand that is reasonably largeish but folds up dead tiny when empty?
i like the string bags. they hold a lot and are easy to sling over your shoulder and are tiny when not in use. this site has a ton of choices:

they also have some that fold up really tiny:

I will take the cloth bag challenge with you guys for this week. right now, I use them about 50% of the time. I remember sometimes because frankly I hate, detest, and loathe plastic shopping bags. they are ugly, thin, cut into you hands when loaded down and have no aesthetic value whatsoever. My hatred for plastic bags pushes me to use cloth. I have an assortment that i’ve used, and resewn, been given by friends, found, etc. that hang on hooks in one place in the basement. I enjoy using them because they are colorful, and make daily mundane shopping sort of cheerful. Maybe, i have too much time on my hands. I could certainly do better, so i’m in.
Also, I will use my Nalgene water bottle, as I usually forget to take it with me. I will fill it halfway, so it’s not so heavy to carry. I would like a ligher steel bottle, but don’t want to buy anything for this challenge, I’ll use what I have.
I feel the same way about plastic bags Victoria. I also feel like they sit in the pantry and breed until there are enough of them to eat my kitchen.
Most of my bags have been gifts from people. My mom usually gets me some sort of pretty, large bag on her travels. The others I have bought directly from the grocery store. Target has some that fold up to about wallet sized, but they aren’t the biggest bags.
Madge, dining out is a biggie for me right now too, which is frustrating. Food management is the one place where I am usually really organized, but the move has thrown a monkey wrench into that. I’ve been relaxing my standards a bit as to what constitutes a meal. If the kids want cheese and pickles and carrots for breakfast that’s good enough for me right now.
The Container Store has some nice bike hooks that you can mount on your wall. Talk to one of the sales people and try to figure out what type of wall you have. Once you know you can get the correct screw/anchor system and mount the hooks. Then you can hang your bike not from the ceiling upside down, but from one hook on the wall. Your bike will then hang vertically as though it’s riding up your wall. It 1) gets the bike off the floor, but not in a winter storage type way. 2) is very accessible (especially if you’re a weakling like me and can hardly lift my Trek).

Thanks Mike! That looks like just what I need and it’s inexpensive too!
Picked up a nice string bag at the East End Food Co-op yesterday. The thing folds up as small as a tennis ball, but expands to hold up to forty pounds of groceries! (Have not tested this yet)
Stashed it in the driver’s side car door. Goodbye plastic bags!
good on ya rich.
i succeeded in not getting take out over the weekend. still havent got my water bottle, i’m thinking of alternatives, like maybe a glass jar. that way i wont have to buy anything ...
